Storm Pulse for Operators: Southwest Flood + Dakotas Marginal — Monday, September 28, 2026

Inspired by Tygart Media Storm Tracker — Storm Updates: Southwest Flood Moderate, Dakotas Marginal — Monday, September 28, 2026 — https://tygartmedia.com/storm-updates-september-28-2026-southwest-flood-dakotas-marginal/.

The morning operator desk opened on a blank severe map. That is the change that matters this afternoon. SPC’s 2000 UTC Day 1 outlook now carries a Marginal Risk across western and northern South Dakota. MD 2330 keeps watch issuance at 5 percent — isolated hail near 1.25 inches and gusts to 60 mph, not a CAT day. No convective watches are valid. WPC still owns the organized desk: Moderate excessive rainfall on the Southwest and Four Corners, expanded at 16Z to the California–Arizona–Nevada tripoint. A short NWS Las Vegas Severe Thunderstorm Warning covered San Bernardino County near Amboy and I-40. Today’s 12Z LSR window is still empty. Cherry County, Nebraska and Willow Park, Texas hail remain yesterday’s tickets. Polo is a Baja hurricane plus a U.S. moisture feed, not a CONUS landfall.

Owner / Principal

Do not convert the Dakotas Marginal into a national surge. Cash and overtime stay on water first: Arizona Rim, western and southwestern New Mexico including burn-scar drainages near Lordsburg, San Juan and adjacent southwest Colorado, southern Nevada valleys, and the newly added lower Colorado / tripoint ZIPs. Stage pumps, extractors, sandbags, and extra dehumidifiers before the next training core. Rapid City and Aberdeen CWAs get a local on-call for isolated hail and tree, not a regional CAT roster. Close Cherry County and Willow Park photos if they are still missing. Do not pull a standing Four Corners dry-out to chase a 5-percent watch probability. Do not staff Polo as a California or Arizona landfall. Tuesday’s Day 2 Marginal into southern and eastern New Mexico and west Texas is tomorrow’s payroll, not this afternoon’s overtime.

GM / Ops

Reboard the morning columns. Column A — live water, now larger: add Needles / Laughlin / lower Colorado and the tripoint to Flagstaff, Phoenix north and east slopes, Albuquerque west and south, Las Cruces, Lordsburg, Durango/Farmington, and southern Nevada valley shops. On-call is extraction and traffic-safe access. Column B — new pulse, not a deploy: western and northern South Dakota this afternoon into evening. Isolated Black Hills cells spreading east-northeast. Staff one estimator and one tree/hail pair if a cell verifies; do not shut a branch. Column C — local product: San Bernardino desert ZIPs along I-40 after the afternoon SVR. Check hail-struck vehicles, then return to flood staging. Column D — just-hit hold: Cherry County and Parker County daylight photos. Confirm weather.gov before a truck leaves a New Mexico fan for a South Dakota hail ping.

Project Manager

Southwest water has not changed protocol since morning, only footprint. First four hours if a ticket verifies: exterior and approach photos while it is still safe, extract before tarp unless the roof is open. Occupied homes get a category call, contents lift, and a moisture map before any wall comes down. Vacant commercial can take pumps and air movers once power and gas are confirmed. Burn-scar fans, slot canyons, and rocky drainages on the expanded Moderate are sediment and Category 3 until proven otherwise. Photograph crawlspaces and finished basements on the first safe visit; the mold clock starts when water is inside. Dakotas if a cell verifies: roof, vehicle, and soft-metal set in remaining daylight. San Bernardino I-40: same photo set only if hail or a wet downburst actually hit the address. Dual-peril houses log both perils on the same visit.

Estimator

Four files, still not one. Water: the Moderate outline grew. Price extraction, drying, and a mold-clock line on already wet soils even when shingles look intact. Standing water, saturated gypsum, and HVAC coils come from the meter map, not a driveway photo. Hail/wind pulse: Dakotas Marginal is isolated 1-inch-plus hail and 60 mph gust language, not a line. Do not write a full-roof pack from a watch that was never issued. San Bernardino SVR: radar-indicated quarter hail and 60 mph near Amboy — price the address after a daylight look, not the polygon. Just-hit: 1.00-inch south of Merriman and north of Whitman, 1.00-inch north-northwest of Willow Park, 66 mph Sully County, 60 mph Sutton County, limbs on FM 730. Those are Sunday night tickets. Today’s LSR board after 12Z is empty. Do not fold Polo landfall language into a U.S. estimate. Leave ALE for occupied residential after livability is known.

Technician

Meter and category before any wall opens. Overland flow on burn scars, rocky fans, and the lower Colorado corridor is Category 3 until the source is proven clean. Wind-driven rain through a failed flashing is not automatically Category 1. PPE stays on for still-draining interiors. Outage blocks: electrical safety first; generators stay outside and downwind; do not run air movers on an unverified panel. If a Black Hills or northern South Dakota cell verifies, hail hides bruising in gutters and soft metal — photograph before discard. Same rule on any I-40 desert vehicle or metal that actually took quarter hail. Do not start insulation removal until the PM signs the map.

Business Development

Call the people who already have water, or who just took a local product, not the outlook. Commercial property managers on Mogollon Rim, Lordsburg, San Juan, southern Nevada, and the new tripoint / lower Colorado ZIPs get a short local note — dock, elevator pit, after-hours access, pumps already staged. Residential adjusters on those ZIPs get a moisture-map window. Rapid City / Aberdeen desks get a one-line “if a cell verifies we can photo tonight” offer, not a deploy blast. San Bernardino I-40 gets a check on the expired SVR addresses only. Cherry County and Parker County still get last night’s daylight photo offer. Do not spray the Dakotas Marginal as a CAT. Do not pitch Polo as a U.S. hurricane landfall. Do not name clients. Confirm the county product before the note sounds like a watch is up.

Commercial vs Residential

The event still splits on water, not on the new Marginal. Four Corners and tripoint commercial is warehouse roof ponding, dock wells, elevator pits, and after-hours access; residential in the same counties is finished basements, crawlspaces, contents, and ALE if the house is unlivable. Burn-scar fans hit both occupancy types with sediment. The Dakotas Marginal is thin on both sides unless a cell verifies: commercial would be membrane, HVAC, and glass; residential would be vehicles, soft metal, and living-space water only if the roof opened. San Bernardino I-40 is a local pulse inside a flood overlay, not a wind corridor. Do not send one crew from a Lordsburg fan to a Rapid City roof without checking which county still has a product.
