Inspired by Tygart Media Storm Tracker — Storm Updates: Upper Midwest Slight Risk, VA–NC Wind Scatter — Friday, September 11, 2026 — https://tygartmedia.com/storm-updates-september-11-2026-upper-midwest-slight-risk-virginia-north-carolina/.
What changed since the morning companion: the 2000 UTC Day 1 outlook still holds a Slight Risk of large hail (isolated 2+ inches), damaging wind, and a couple of tornadoes from northeast South Dakota into western and northern Minnesota late this afternoon and tonight. No convective watches are valid. Mesoscale Discussion 2281 (1937 UTC) is the new afternoon product — loosely organized clusters over southern Virginia and northern North Carolina, 55–70 mph gusts possible, watch issuance unlikely. WPC still carries Slight flood language over northern Minnesota and far southern Arizona; the 16Z update added the Florida Panhandle to broader Marginal flood rates. Today’s official LSR window (12Z Friday onward) still has no new tornado, hail, or wind reports. Last night’s Randall County hail and Colby/Plainview wind remain the live claim pile.
Owner / Principal
Do not treat MD 2281 as a second Slight Risk. It is a local wind desk. Capital and overtime stay on two piles: (1) already-documented Texas Panhandle and Thomas County, Kansas work from Thursday night, and (2) Minnesota–northeast South Dakota staging if cells actually produce after peak heating. Hold branch-wide redeploy from quiet Mid-South or Carolinas jobs. Northern Minnesota is the dual-ticket county set — hail/wind plus interior water if cores train — so tarp and extraction inventory should sit on that side of the Slight, not on a speculative central Kansas overnight Marginal. Photograph-in-daylight guidance still applies: owners who call after dark will have weaker first photos. Do not invent a watch that SPC has not issued.
GM / Ops
Board Texas South Plains residual first; those LSRs are already in. Put Watertown–Aberdeen–Willmar–St. Cloud–Fergus Falls–Brainerd–Hibbing–Duluth on evening call, with tree and generator crews staged before clustering. Virginia and North Carolina offices (AKQ, MHX, RAH, RNK footprint) staff scattered wind and service-drop work only — not Watch 665 staffing. Santa Cruz County, Arizona remains a flash-flood and wash desk; Florida Panhandle is localized urban flooding, not a company surge. Confirm which county has a warning before you move a crew between last night’s Texas recovery and tonight’s Minnesota corridor. Do not pull occupied commercial drying jobs for a conditional overnight Kansas cell.
Project Manager
If a Minnesota or South Dakota cell verifies, first four hours stay the same as morning: exterior photo set in remaining daylight if safe, interior moisture map, then tarp or extract. Do not open walls until the map and photo set are locked. Occupied residential gets contents protection and a category call before demolition. Vacant commercial can take more aggressive dry-in once power is confirmed safe. On residual Randall/Carson/Hale County hail jobs, keep vehicle and soft-metal documentation separate from roof. For any new VA–NC tree-on-roof ticket, treat it as isolated wind — one cluster, one address — not a line event. Northern Minnesota training rain can put water inside the same house that took hail an hour earlier; log both perils on the first visit.
Estimator
Three scopes, three files: hail, wind, water. Overnight Texas is still hail size plus measured impact density, not a phone photo of one shingle. Discrete Upper Midwest supercells skew large-hail roof, HVAC, and vehicles; evening bows add tree, wire, and window. MD 2281 work, if it verifies, is typically a few squares of roof plus a tree and a service drop — do not write a Slight-Risk line estimate for a 20-percent watch probability. Northern Minnesota flood pockets need extraction and drying line items even when the roof is the hail story. Leave ALE and contents for the residential conversation after livability is known. Do not price full replacement from a driveway shot taken after dark.
Technician
Meter and category before any wall opens. Northern Minnesota dual tickets can mix hail-driven roof leaks with training rain; treat interior water as category 2 until the source is proven clean. PPE stays on for residual WV/OH high-water work that is still draining from yesterday. On outage blocks — Texas South Plains leftover or Minnesota tonight — confirm electrical safety before air movers; generators stay outside and downwind. Large hail hides in gutters and soft metal; photograph before discard. VA–NC tree work is chainsaw and tarp, not a demolition start. Do not begin insulation removal until the PM signs the moisture map.
Business Development
Commercial property managers in Randall, Carson, and Hale counties still get the first call — those roofs and yards are already hit. Quiet outreach to standing Upper Midwest commercial accounts before dark is higher value than door-knocking a risk that has not produced an LSR today. Southern Virginia and northern North Carolina get a short, local note only if a cluster actually drops trees; do not blast the Mid-Atlantic as if a watch were up. Santa Cruz County flood language is for facility directors with poor-drainage sites, not a residential canvas. Skip mass social posts for the Florida Panhandle Marginal add-on.
Commercial vs Residential
The event still splits by occupancy. Texas Panhandle commercial is hail dents, roof penetrations, and after-hours lift access; residential in the same counties is vehicles, soft metal, and living-space water. Upper Midwest commercial under discrete cells takes hail on membrane and HVAC first; residential adds ALE if the house is dark and wet overnight. VA–NC commercial is mostly site access, fence, and a section of roof; residential is the tree on the service drop. Southern Arizona commercial is wash and dock flooding; residential is the same wash into a slab. Stage commercial roof and dry-in first on verified hail; stage residential contents and category documentation on verified water. Do not send one crew to both Minnesota tonight and Texas leftover without checking the live county warning.
