The short answer: for most restoration shops doing insurance work in North America, Xactimate — because it’s the format carriers’ claim systems read, and that settles the question before it starts. Symbility (now part of CoreLogic, sold as Claims Connect) is a legitimate cloud-based alternative that some shops prefer for its interface and mobile workflow. The decision isn’t about which is “better” in the abstract. It’s about which one fits how your shop works and who you’re submitting to.
What each one is
Xactimate is built by Xactware, a Verisk company. It’s the industry-standard estimating platform for property claims — desktop software plus Xactimate Online (browser-based) plus mobile apps, with the regional price database, sketch tools, and the carrier-connected XactNet tier. When an adjuster says “send it in Xactimate,” this is what they mean. (More on the product in What Is Xactimate and What Does It Cost?.)
Symbility was an independent Canadian estimating-software company, now part of CoreLogic, offered as part of the Claims Connect platform. It’s cloud-based, designed around a more modern interface, with an emphasis on mobile use and collaboration — multiple people working a claim together in real time.
Both price from structured line-item databases. Both produce itemized estimates. They are different tools for the same job, not different jobs.
The factor that decides it for most shops
What your carriers accept. This is the whole decision for a large share of restoration contractors, and it’s not close: the North American insurance claims ecosystem runs on Xactimate format. Estimates submitted in Xactimate move through carrier systems without translation. Estimates submitted in anything else need the carrier to work with a format outside their standard workflow — which some will do and some won’t, but none prefer.
If your work is primarily insurance restoration and your carriers expect Xactimate, the comparison is academic. You run Xactimate. The question only becomes interesting for shops where that constraint doesn’t bind.
Where the comparison is real
Shops doing non-insurance or mixed work. Retail roofing, remodeling, direct-to-consumer restoration — anywhere the estimate goes to a homeowner rather than a carrier’s claim system. Here the format constraint lifts, and interface, mobile workflow, and cost become the actual decision factors.
Team workflow preferences. Shops that live on mobile and collaborate on claims in real time sometimes prefer Symbility’s cloud-native design. Shops with dedicated estimators on desktops tend to be comfortable in Xactimate’s deeper toolbox. This is genuinely a matter of how your people work — there’s no universal right answer.
Cost structure. Both are subscription products priced per user, and both have tiers. Get actual quotes from both vendors for your seat count before comparing — third-party directory pricing for either product is unreliable, as we found when researching Xactimate’s own pricing.
What to ask before you choose
- Do my carriers require Xactimate format? If yes, stop here.
- Where do my estimators work? Desks, trucks, or both — and how much does offline capability matter?
- Who else touches the estimate? If adjusters, reviewers, or clients need in, how does each platform handle that?
- What’s the real per-seat cost at my size? Quote both. Don’t trust directories.
- Can I trial it on a real claim? A demo on sample data tells you nothing. One real estimate tells you everything about fit.
The honest summary
Xactimate is the standard. Symbility is the alternative. Standards win on compatibility; alternatives win when they fit a specific workflow better. Most insurance restoration shops choose the standard for the same reason most people drive on the right side of the road — not because it’s better, but because everyone else is there. Shops outside the insurance workflow have a real choice, and should make it on workflow fit and verified cost, not marketing.
Where this comes from
- From the vendors (official): Xactimate’s product structure (desktop, Online, mobile, XactNet) per Xactware/Verisk; Symbility’s position within CoreLogic’s Claims Connect platform per CoreLogic’s product materials.
- From the field (labeled): the workflow-fit framing — cloud-native collaboration vs. desktop depth, mobile-first vs. estimator-workstation preferences — reflects third-party comparison write-ups and estimator discussions (not vendor-official). Treat as informed opinion, not specification.

No disparagement here is intentional — both products serve real shops. If anything above mischaracterizes either platform, the vendors are welcome to correct the record; the goal is an accurate map, not a winner.
